Why did the Soviet Union cause the famine?
The Soviet Union caused the famine or "Holodomor" because they saw that the Ukrainian culture was very different from the Russian culture and saw it as a threat to soviet rule. As an attempt to end the threat and strengthen Ukrainian ties to the Soviet Union they first confiscated food from stores, then from individual homes. Once what food the Ukrainians had was taken they instituted the need for passports to travel from anywhere outside of their home villages or towns and rationing food to Ukrainians in urban places that would be seen by foreign visitors though it was often barely enough to survive on Resulting in cannibalism of the dead by those in desperate need.
