Reactions veried greatly from support of the communist system and its actions to outrage at the purpose starvation of millions of Ukrainians including women and children. Though many governments knew exactly what was happening to the Ukrainian people they did not interfere for many reasons from not wanting to interfere with national sovereignty or provoking hostilities from the Soviet Union and the rising fear of the nazi threat. Some countries did not want to interfere as they currently were undergoing isolationist policies after the "Great war" also known as the First World War.
Modernday Effects
In the modern day even after almost 100 years the effects of the "Holodomor" are still felt by the Ukrainian population. Not only are the survivors of the "Holodomor" still effected medically but so is the country itself. Ukrainian culture was weakened by the deaths of its political, economic, and religious leaders but parts of the country and highly populated by Russians who descend from those who moved into the towns and villages vacated by the deaths of many Ukrainians ensuring that part of the Ukrainian has strong ties to Russia. These ties have lead to the civil war currently rampaging throughout ukrain.
